UnTextbook Units

I have listed a few units that I believe will be very interesting to read over the next few weeks. Enjoy!

Week 1- Adam and Eve: Why not start the semester off with a story from the very beginning? This unit talks through Genesis and the story of Adam and Eve, the first male and female on earth. Im interested in biblical history and feel that this is a great place to start!

Most people have seen this picture or a picture similar to this. I think it would be fun to hear and read the different opinions of people while discussing Adam and Eve and creation.

Week 2- Noah and the Ark: It's only right to keep the stories in chronological order...so why not go right into the flood mentioned in the bible? Old history like this fascinates me! This unit not only goes over Noah and the Ark, but also takes reader through the Tower of Babel from Genesis.

Week 3- Bible Women: After learning about the first woman in the world, why not learn about the rest of the women in the bible? This unit walks through both the Old and New Testament and tells of the various women mentioned in Scripture. As women play such a major role in today's society, it would be great to learn about some of the early women and their strengths!

Week 4- Gospel of Mark: To finish the theme of these last few units, the Gospel of Mark will be a great ending point after going through the Old Testament. This unit would go through the entire book of Mark and the life of Jesus Christ.

Yes, I understand that each of these unites come from the bible, but I'm very interested in this material and know that we can all gain knowledge from scripture!

Storybook Favorites

The first Storybook I looked at was titled The PrinceDiaries. What I thought would be similar to the popular movie, The Princess Diaries, this story’s introduction was very funny and interesting. The author starts the novel off acting like the story will be based on a princess and then restates that instead, it’s a bout two princes who are very different. This story won’t be like most fairytales. Instead, the author will take the reader through the lives of two princes. One prince is in love with a prince, but her father the king does not approve while the other prince has absolutely no charm. The author really grabs the reader’s attention with the creative writing style.

For my second Storybook, I chose to read That’s The HolidaySpirit. I chose to read this because I love holiday seasons, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas! Luckily, this story was about both of those holidays, plus Valentine’s Day. The book breaks down each holiday and describes how they are celebrated and their history in the world. The author calls Christmas the holiday of joy, Thanksgiving the holiday of thanks and Valentine’s the holiday of love. I’m interested to keep reading this story and learn more about each holiday and the unknown secrets of hot they were formed.

Finally, I read a Storybook by Sarah Sandel titled TheTrickster of OU. I was first interested in this story because it was about OU and the design was colored in crimson and cream, so it was a must read! Sandel does a good job of building the story in her introduction and leaves the reader wanting to carry on with the book. In the story, an OU student pranks the university in various ways and challenges OU police to catch him. His quest is to leave a new and different kind of legacy at OU.

Each of the books are a fun read and show a lot of creativity!

Introduction

Hello! My name is Landon. I am currently a senior at the University of Oklahoma pursuing a degree in Advertising. I’m from the small town of Cleveland, Oklahoma, which is just about 30 miles north west of Tulsa. I came to OU because my entire family has attended school here I grew up loving the Sooners!

I enjoy playing sports, reading a good book and hanging out with friends. I graduate this May and I’m looking forward to this next chapter in life!

I chose to major in advertising because I have a passion for all things creative. Although the advertising agency is quite competitive and harsh, it can be a lot of fun. My goal is to be a creative director at an agency one day. This means I will be leading copywriters, art directors and designers to create print ads, TV spots, billboards and all other types of ads.

I hope to one day open up my own creative agency in Oklahoma City. Through the years I have noticed many brands that can’t afford an ad agency to brand their business. I would like to help local business and non-profits by creating affordable designs and branding products.

I hope to attend grad school after graduation to earn a Masters degree. Although I haven’t quite decided what to earn my masters in, I am leaning toward a Masters in the Science of Architecture. This field would allow me to become an urban developer. Besides advertising, I would like to design new neighborhoods and districts in up and coming cities. Although this is a completely different field then advertising, I believe the same creativeness is needed.

My goal is to make Oklahoma City a respected city that attracts people from all over the world. The city is already headed in the right direction and I am excited to be apart of its growth!

I love to travel! This is a picture of me visiting France.

Week 1 Storytelling: The Nerd and The Bully

There once was a young boy named Timmy who lived in a small town with a small family. Timmy wore glasses that were a little too big for his scrawny face and had acne that made him feel insecure. He wasn’t much for social interaction, but he enjoyed the few close friends he had. Intelligent beyond his years, Timmy skipped three years of middle school and transferred to high school classes.
He loved to read whenever he had the chance. Timmy read fiction books, history books, comic books and almost every type of book imaginable. He enjoyed the quietness and simplicity of reading. Timmy loved reading books so much that he replaced playing sports or joining school activities for reading his books.
Timmy’s reserved attitude and low self-esteem left him alone to his books most of the time. His parents wouldn’t let him hang out with any high school students because they thought he was too young.  Many of the other students would pick on him for not quite fitting in. They laughed at his glasses and called him a nerd. Timmy never said anything rude back to the bullies. Most people thought he was too scared to stick up for himself. He was bullied for his entire time as a student in high school, but Timmy knew his diligence to studying and reading would pay off. Timmy left high school angry. He hardly had any friends and was bitter toward his past bullies. He knew he couldn’t let others tear him down.
A few years later, Time Magazine published Timmy on the front cover page. That year, Timmy had created a website that attracted millions of users. He became an instant multi-millionaire at his young age. He retired the following year with enough wealth to last him his entire life.

As a couple of more years went on, Timmy received an invitation to his high school reunion. Reluctant due to past memories, Timmy decided to face his fear and attend the reunion. He was proud of the success he had accomplished and was confident others would approve of who he had become. Upon his arrival he greeted by familiar faces. His old peers praised him for his numerous accomplishments. As the reunion progressed he heard an infamous voice. “Hey, four eyes!” said a past bully. Timmy looked toward the bully, and walked away. His comments weren’t worth Timmy’s time.

Author's Note: The story comes from the fable The Lion and The Ass. In the fable, a confident lion walks through the forest and animals clear a pathway. An Ass says an ignorant comment to the lion as he passes by and angers the lion. When the lion sees who said the comment, he walks on and ignores the critic. The meaning of the fable is to not resent the remarks of a fool, but to ignore them.

My story has the same meaning, but involves modern-day people. Timmy, the nerd, who is constantly being bullied is the lion while the Ass is the bully. Timmy chooses to ignore the bully when he continues to harsh, because the bully is not worth Timmy's time.

I love stories where an underdog can overcome adversity! Timmy is meant to inspire people to never give up and ignore the cruel while fighting through adversity. Although he was made fun of and teased, he never gave up.

Personally, I hate bullies. It is unfortunate that so many people get picked on by other people and even more unfortunate that sometimes, there isn't always a happy ending. I wanted this story to give an understanding to the person who gets bullied. I think everyone is different and has their own insecurities and everyone should respect that. It is sad to see so many people bullied for being different.

I had never heard of this fable before reading this textbook, but I really enjoyed it. Not only was it short and to the point, but if offered a great message to readers. This will be a fable that sticks with me because of its great message.

--The image is a representation of the typical "bully and nerd" people see at school or in the movies. Luckily, schools are getting stricter and stricter on bullying and less harmful activities such as this occur in schools. We can all do our part to make sure this does;t happen and look out for one another!

Favorite Place

This past summer, I had the opportunity to study abroad in London, England. After immersing myself in the British culture for nearly a month, London became my favorite place!

I traveled to London with the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. During my time in London, I toured various tourist attractions as well as newspaper offices, advertising agencies, radio stations, and TV news stations. London is home of some of the top media sources in the world. As an advertising student at OU, it was the trip of a lifetime!

London is full of diverse people and diverse food. The city is full of history and attractions that don't compare to any other place I've ever traveled to before. I'm looking forward to visiting this city again.
